How to get more plumbing leads: 9 practical ways

Most plumbing companies do not have a lead problem so much as a leak problem. Here are nine ways to get more plumbing leads, starting with the ones that recover work you are already paying for.

1. Answer the calls you are already getting

Before spending a dollar on new leads, look at what happens to the ones arriving now. Pull a week of call logs. How many calls went unanswered? How many came after hours and reached voicemail? How many forms sat until the next morning?

Plumbing buyers with an active problem rarely wait. They call the next company in the results. Every unanswered call is a lead you paid for — through ads, your website or years of reputation — that went to someone else. Fixing this is usually the cheapest lead generation available, which is why we cover it in depth on our speed to lead page.

2. Cover the hours when emergencies happen

A lot of plumbing work arrives outside office hours: the water heater that fails on a Sunday, the drain that backs up during a family dinner, the pipe that bursts overnight. If nobody answers then, those leads are gone by morning.

You do not necessarily need an overnight dispatcher. Missed-call text-back sends an immediate reply to anyone whose call goes unanswered. An automated responder can acknowledge a form, ask the qualifying questions and offer a booking slot. The AI Appointment Engine does this end to end, but even a basic text-back is better than voicemail.

3. Fix your Google Business Profile

When someone searches for a plumber on their phone, the businesses shown with the map take most of the attention. Your Google Business Profile is what earns a spot there.

  • Set the primary category to Plumber
  • List every service you want more of — water heater installation, drain cleaning, sewer line repair, leak detection
  • Keep hours accurate, including emergency availability if you offer it
  • Upload real photos of jobs, vans and crew regularly
  • Reply to every review, good or bad

This is unglamorous work and it is often the fastest visibility a plumbing company can gain. Our plumbing SEO service starts here for that reason.

4. Ask for a review after every job

Review count and recency both influence who appears in local results, and they influence whether the next homeowner calls you or the plumber below you. Most satisfied customers never leave a review unless asked.

Make the ask systematic: a text with a direct review link sent shortly after the job is completed, ideally when the tech has just solved the problem. Reviews that mention the specific work — "replaced our water heater the same day" — help more than generic praise.

5. Get Local Services Ads working properly

For many residential plumbers, Local Services Ads become a major source of paid leads. They appear at the top of the page and you pay per lead rather than per click.

They also need attention. Keep your hours and service categories accurate, answer quickly, keep reviews coming, and dispute leads that are not genuine plumbing work. A neglected LSA profile slowly stops showing.

6. Stop running every job type in one campaign

An emergency leak search and a tankless water heater research search are completely different buyers. One wants a phone number now. The other wants to compare options. Running both through the same campaign and landing page means overpaying for one and underserving the other.

Separate campaigns for emergency repair, drain and sewer, water heaters and larger planned work like repiping let you control budget and send each searcher to a page built for them. We go into the structure on our Google Ads for plumbers page.

7. Build pages for the work you want more of

If your website has one Services page listing everything, it is unlikely to rank well for any specific job. Water heater replacement, sewer line repair, leak detection and drain cleaning are separate searches.

A dedicated page for each — explaining the work, what affects the price and how you handle it — gives Google something specific to rank and gives the visitor a reason to call you. Water heater and repipe pages deserve extra care because they win the larger planned jobs. More on that in plumbing website mistakes.

8. Build referral relationships deliberately

Some of the most reliable plumbing work never comes through search at all. Property managers need a plumber they can call for tenant problems. Realtors and home inspectors regularly find plumbing issues during sales. Water damage restoration companies often need plumbing repairs before they can start work.

A handful of strong relationships with these groups can produce steady, repeat work. Treat them as a channel: keep a list, follow up, respond fast when they send someone, and make it easy for them to recommend you.

9. Follow up on every unsold estimate

Water heater replacements, repipes and sewer line jobs are often quoted and then left. The homeowner said they would think about it, got two more quotes, and nobody called them back.

A short follow-up sequence on every unsold estimate — a check-in, an answer to common objections, a reminder of financing if you offer it — recovers work that was already most of the way to a yes. It is part of what our CRM and lead follow-up service sets up.

Where to start

If you can only do three things, do them in this order: answer every call, fix your Google Business Profile, and follow up on unsold estimates. All three recover work that is already within reach before you spend anything on new traffic.

Once those are in place, more traffic from paid search and better pages becomes far more valuable, because more of it turns into booked jobs. That is the approach behind our plumbing lead generation work.

Recover the leads you already get before buying more
Cover after-hours calls, even with a simple text-back
Your Google Business Profile often matters more than your homepage
